Discover The Best Foundations For Aging Skin

From dryness and dullness to fine lines and dark spots, our skin changes as we age – and our makeup should change with it. Read on to discover the best foundations for aging skin and how to keep makeup from settling into wrinkles.

How to find the best foundation for aging skin

Traditional foundations aren’t always suited to dry, mature skin and can settle into fine lines, wrinkles and dry patches. When choosing a foundation for aging skin, look for:

  • Hydrating ingredients: To help keep skin hydrated and prevent foundation from creasing, use a formula enriched with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid
  • Brightening ingredients: To help create a radiant-looking complexion, opt for a foundation that contains ingredients known to help brighten dull skin
  • Blurring spheres: Thelp minimize the appearance of large pores, fine lines and wrinkles, look for a formula that reflects light away from these creases
  • Liquid formulas: Powder foundations tend to settle into fine lines and poresaccentuating their appearance, while a liquid formula will offer a smoother finish
  • Medium coverage: A light coverage foundation is unlikely to conceal discoloration and pigmentation. A medium coverage, lightweight formula works best for mature skin.

How to apply foundation to mature skin

As skin becomes drier and duller with age, and fine lines, discoloration and pigmentation become more prominent, applying foundation to mature skin might seem tricky. However, these four simple steps will help keep foundation from settling into wrinkles.

Step 1: Moisturize with serum and a face cream

As dry skin absorbs the hydrating ingredients from the foundation, it may also draw the product into fine lines and dry patches, resulting in an uneven and unflattering finish. As such, foundation should be applied as part of a healthy skincare routine.

Apply both a hydrating serum and moisturizing face cream before using foundation to keep skin nourished and plumpand to minimize creasing.

Step 2: Prime

After applying serum and moisturizer, squeeze a pea-sized amount of primer onto the back of your hand. Gently rub into the skin to soften, then smooth an even layer onto the face and neck. Wait at least 90 seconds before applying foundation.

Step 3: Apply with a makeup sponge

Foundation should be applied to mature skin with a makeup spongeUsing a brush and/or the fingers can create a blotchy, uneven finish that highlights fine lines and doesn’t adequately cover pigmentation.

  • Dispense a pea-sized amount of foundation onto the back of the hand
  • Dampen the sponge, then dip into the foundation
  • Apply to the larger areas of the face first (the cheeks and forehead), using the large side of the sponge
  • Blot around the smaller areas of the face (the nose, chin and under the eyes) using the pointed tip
  • Blend for an even and natural-looking finish

Step 4: Set with a finishing powder

While your foundation is still wet, gently press a setting powder into the skin using a powder brush. Focus on pigmented and uneven areas that need extra coverage for a smooth, airbrushed finish.
