A Guide to Face Cleanser

Throughout the day, dirt, oils and pollutants accumulate on the skin. Unless washed away with a thorough facial cleansing routine, these impurities can contribute to breakouts, dehydration and premature aging. Read on to discover what a cleanser is, what it does and how to use it.

What is a cleanser?

Facial cleansers come in multiple textures (foam, gel, lotion and water), each capable of cleansing the skin, but with their own unique benefits. Cleansers are designed to help clarify the face, and differ from soap or body wash as cleansers typically contain more moisturizing ingredients while minimizing irritation.

Cleanser vs face wash

Face wash is a water-based product that lathers up when massaged into the skin. Its astringent qualities help to control excess oil and deeply clean pores. However, unless infused with nourishing ingredients, face washes can be harsh on the skin and result in a tight, dry feeling.

Cleansers also clean the skin but are often gentler with a richer texture. They’re typically formulated with nourishing ingredients, like red ginseng and Vitamin B5, to help hydrate and soothe the skin while cleansing.

What does cleanser do?

An essential first step in every skincare routine, cleansing benefits the skin in many ways.

Removing makeup and impurities

Using a hydrating facial cleanser helps to remove impurities, dead skin cells, oil, dirt, and traces of makeup that may clog pores, leaving skin feeling refreshed and revitalized.

To help maintain the appearance of clear skin, try No7 Micellar Cleansing Water. Formulated with No7’s Tri-Vit Complex and red ginseng, it works to dissolve makeup, impurities and excess oil, leaving skin looking clean and free of shine. This cleanser also helps to protect skin’s natural, healthy balance and is suitable for all skin types.

Keeping skin hydrated

Cleansing daily can also help to maintain healthy hydration levels in the skin.

For an intensely nourishing cleanser, try No7 Radiant Results Nourishing Melting Gel Cleanser. Infused with Vitamins B5, C, E and grapeseed oil, its hydrating formula transforms from a gel to a cleansing oil to a milk as it’s massaged in, leaving skin feeling clean and silky soft.

Brightening skin

Cleansing daily with an exfoliating Vitamin C cleanser can help to brighten the appearance of skin as it gently buffs away dead cells that gives the complexion a dull tone.

For a refreshed look, try No7 Radiance+ Exfoliating Cleanser Infused with Vitamin C and apricot seed, it helps to refine pores and improve skin texture for a healthy-looking glow. Perfect for daily use, apply morning and night on damp skin then rinse off with warm water.

Reducing the appearance of fines lines and wrinkles

Using an exfoliating cleanser helps to buff away dead, dull skin cells.

To complement the skin’s natural renewal process, exfoliate daily with No7 Lift & Luminate Cleansing Exfoliator. Infused with Vitamin B5, C and E, it leaves skin looking perfectly cleansed and youthful, with a smoother and plumper appearance.

How to wash your face

Different textures of face cleanser require different methods of application, so be sure to read the instructions before applying. As a general rule, though, follow these 5 simple steps on how to cleanse skin:

Step 1: Wash your hands to ensure they are clean and to avoid adding extra impurities to the skin

Step 2: Dampen the skin with lukewarm water

Step 3: Dispense a dime-size amount of cleanser on the fingertips, then apply to the face, avoiding the eyes and mouth

Step 4: Massage the face cleanser into the skin using small, circular motions for up to a minute to allow the product to activate

Step 5: Rinse the face with lukewarm water, and pat dry with a soft, clean towel

How often should you wash your face?

Skin should be cleansed twice a day: first thing in the morning to awaken the skin and remove excess product from your night-time skincare routine, and at night to remove impurities and makeup that has built up throughout the day.

How long should you wash your face?

When washing your face, follow the 60 second rule. Massage a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type into the face for a full 60 seconds. Then, rinse off, pat the skin dry, and continue with your regular skincare routine.

Why shouldn’t you wash your face in the shower?

The delicate skin on your face is different to the skin on your body, and therefore needs to be treated differently. The hotter water we tend to use in the shower can strip the face of its natural protective barrier and dry it out, causing redness and inflammation. It’s best to cleanse the face separately after showering.
