What is International Women’s Day?
Observed every year, IWD celebrates the achievements of women and raises awareness about the current challenges surrounding gender equality. The United Nations-sanctioned holiday allows us to honor not only those who came before us, but also the future generations to come, and celebrates the societal contributions made by women.
What is The History of International Women’s Day?
The history of IWD can be traced back to the early 1900s, with the first National Women’s Day being held across the USA in 1909. Backed by Clara Zetkin, leader of the ‘Women’s Office’ in the German Social Democratic Party, the day became internationally recognized in 1911, with countries such as Denmark and Switzerland campaigning for women’s rights.
Recognized by the United Nations in 1975, the first International Women’s Day theme was introduced in 1996 ‘Celebrating The Past, Planning For The Future’. Each new year explores a new theme, helping to raise awareness on different challenges. The ‘I’m Possible’ campaign by Adidas was featured in the 2022 theme ‘Break the Bias’, which celebrated the women of Dubai and their successes in sport and beyond.
When is International Women’s Day 2023?
This year, International Women’s Day 2023 will be held on the 8th of March and the campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity. The theme is intended to raise awareness on how people may have different circumstances and, in order to, reach an equal outcome, further resources and opportunities may be needed.
