Finding the right eye cream for dark circles can mean the difference between dark, tired-looking eyes and a radiant, youthful-looking complexion. We explain how to help get rid of dark circles and introduce you to our best eye creams for younger, brighter-looking eyes.

What are dark circles?

Known as periorbital skin, the skin under the eyes is a quarter of the thickness of the skin on the rest of the face. Thinner and more delicate, the undereye area is prone to hyperpigmentation, while dark veins beneath the skin are more visible and can cause dark circles to appear.

What causes dark circles under the eyes?

Aging

With age, the skin’s natural fat and collagen levels deplete, causing it to thin and lose elasticity. Dark blood vessels and veins beneath the skin become more visible, causing the undereye area to appear darker.

Dehydration

Dry and dehydrated skin can look dull and lackluster, causing the undereye area to appear darker

Sun damage

To protect the skin from sun damage, the body naturally produces a dark pigment called melanin that can appear unevenly on the skin, resulting in hyperpigmentation and dark circles below the eyes.

Fatigue

The skin naturally works to repair cells overnight. With insufficient sleep, skin cannot adequately renew itself, creating a pale and dull appearance with heightened undereye circles.

Excessive eye strain

Staring at screens for long stretches of time can strain the eyes and cause the blood vessels in the surrounding area to become enlarged, resulting in dark undereye circles.
